How to turn any cards into a game...idea #1

Before the days of Teachers Pay Teachers (I know!  Can you imagine?) I used to make my own simple and creative games with plan old word cards.   Here is one way I would do this.   It is called....drum roll please... The sticker game.   It can be played two different ways basically depending on how many sticker you have laying around to get rid of.  Here is how to do it.
First,  put stickers on some of the word cards you want the kids to practice reading.
I like to choose high interest stickers to get them, well,  interested.
Do not put the stickers on every word card, just some.
These cards were for my Kinders.  Here are some phrases and sentences I used for my Firsties....
Next,  put the cards in a pile,  and flip them over.   Kids take turns picking a card, and reading it.   Keep going until all the cards are gone or until you say the game is over ( because you have that kind of power).
Kids count up how many cards they have with stickers on them.  The one with the most stickers wins!   I give that kid a sticker.  Or, if I'm feeling super generous,  I let all the students turn in however many sticker cards they have for that many stickers.  They love this!
Your kids will beg to play this game.  It is easy prep and a great way to practice reading.  I just store my cards and stickers in a fancy Alaric bag so I can easily pull it out at the end of a group or hand it to a volunteer in the classroom.   Give it a try!!!
Happy reading!

  1. I used to do the same thing when I taught primary! I should use our vocabulary word cards for some games now. Thanks for the reminder.
