Smarties, Smarties,
Doing the word wall all day long.
This is the song I used to sing to start "doing" our word wall when I taught Kindergarten. Did anyone sing it in their head to the Da Butt lyrics by E.U.? If you did you are my soul sister! I would even celebrate sometimes with "Johnny knows a word wall word, OH YEAH!" I can't make this stuff up.
The above craziness is not required in "doing the word wall" although I highly recommend you come up with some sort of signal or chant to start it off. It makes it so much more fun. A lot of the time I would use the word wall as a time filler, or a brain break (this was in the dark ages before go noodle). The song signaled everyone to get ready.
Here is how we would "do the word wall".
I had a cup full of sticks.
On the sticks were activities to do to practice the word wall.
We would pick a stick.
Pick a word.
Practice the word doing the activity on the stick.
Repeat.
I am now a Reading Specialist, and do not do this with my small groups of students since I push in. What would you do if your reading specialist started doing the butt in your room? However this is my go too activity when I have to cover a classroom. I made these to replace my popsicle sticks. They are way cooler. Get them here FREE!
Just print and play!
Your students will LOVE them!
