Let's talk about The Science of Reading

The Science of Reading...

Have you heard this term yet?

Probably.

I feel like this term is suddenly everywhere, and people are FREAKING out about it.

Well don't freak out, take a deep breath I am here to help.

Has your administration told you that your lessons and activities need to be aligned to the science of reading this year?

Perfect.  They are doing what's best for kids.  Which is basically what the whole science of reading explosion is all about.  Using reading research to get the BEST reading instruction possible into the hands of our students.

Why am I qualified to talk about it?  I literally don't know any other way to teach reading.  I started college in 1996-1997 when guess what was happening?  The National Reading Panel.

I graduated in 2000 with my B.S. in Elementary and Early Childhood Education.  Then returned to get my M.E.D in Reading in 2002 When the National Reading Panel Report was hot off the press.  I have read that thing cover to cover SO many times.

Since then I have also been to a few trainings all while working as a reading specialist.

I have been trained as an Orton-Gillingham Level 2 Tutor;  Wilson Reading Instructor; Let's Play Learn, Sonday 1, and Sonday 2 Instructor;  I have been through LETRS training THREE times;  and I have been through Level K-2 Fundations Training.  All of these trainings and programs are rooted in the science of reading.

I have taught hundreds of lessons using all this knowledge.

What I've found is that it is in fact a science, it is not a program that teaches kids to read.  Each program I found  things I liked and disliked.

Over the last eight years I have been creating products to use in my lessons that fit MY teaching style as well as the needs of my students while always being guided by the RESEARCH.

Ok that was longer than I expected but I think you need to know some background before you want to listen to what I have to say.

Which in this blog post is don't freak out.  I can help.  I have materials, lessons,  activities, games, and even some emotional support to give you.  This is the first blog post in a series where I hope to dive into how to use the science of reading in your classroom without losing your mind.

In the mean time,  Follow me on the socials.

Thanks for Reading Friend!
